DescriptionStoke-on-Trent was a County Borough of Staffordshire between 1910 to 1974. The County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent was not styled as a City until 1925. Stoke-on-Trent was granted the right to call itself a City by King George V in 1925, this grant was renewed by Royal Charter in 1974 and 1997. Following Local Government Reorganisation in 1974 Stoke-on-Trent was no longer a County Borough, it exercised the powers of a District Council, until the Local Government Reorganisation in 1997 when Stoke-on-Trent City Council exercised the powers of Unitary Authority.

The County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent continued the functions of Burslem Municipal Borough Council; Fenton Urban District Council; Hanley Council; Longton Municipal Borough Council; Smallthorne Urban District Council; Stoke-upon-Trent Municipal Borough Council and Tunstall Urban District Council, for earlier records please see the relevant Council records.
