TitleRecords of Staffordshire General Infirmary, Stafford
Administrative HistoryThe original central block was called House. In 1891 there had been proposals to rebuild the hospital on a larger site but instead a new North Wing was proposed on vacant land to the side, and in 1894 this plan was reduced in cost to allow for the building of a South Wing as well. The extended building was officially opened in 1897, with an imposing new porch. As well as the main wards the hospital also had theatres and various departments including physiotherapy and occupational health. There was also a nursing school and a nurses' home.
The Infirmary closed after the new District Hospital was built on the Weston Road in the late 1970s, opened 1983, although some services and nursing accommodation were still located there for a few years until 1996.
The 1890s extensions were removed, and the original building with some remodelling was then used for Social Services offices.
