DescriptionThese papers were collected by the late Stephen Hobson, M.B.E, in pursuit of his interest in the history of trade unionism and the pottery industry. For many years he had been engaged in research with a view to eventually publishing a history of the subject.

Stephen Hobson first joined the staff of the National Society of Pottery Workers in 1939 becoming organiser in 1945. For eleven years until his retirement in 1967 he was Assistant General Secretary of the union (now the Ceramic and Allied Trades Union). At various times he was also a member of the National Joint Council for the Pottery Industry; secretary of the operatives side of the Stoneware Industry Wages Board; Operatives Secretary of the National Joint Council; a governor of the North Staffordshire College of Technology and Chairman of the West Midlands Regional Council of the Labour Party. He was awarded the M.B.E. in 1967.

Even after retirement he was Joint Chairman of the Pottery Welfare Society; a Trustee of North Staffordshire Savings Bank and Clerk to Caverswall Parish Council.

Mr Hobson died 23rd June 1972 aged 71.
