TitlePapers of the Legge Family, Earls of Dartmouth
Date1570-1933
DescriptionThis deposit complements a previous group of Dartmouth family papers received from Messrs. Gamlen in 1964 (our ref. DW 1778/D742), but it also supplements the main series of Dartmouth papers now in Staffordshire Record Office (D(W) 1778) and a small group of estate material deposited by Messrs. Thynne and Thynne (DW 1778/D564).
The family deeds and settlements include documents relating to Patshull Hall and estates in Patshull and Pattingham, Co. Staffs, Albrighton and Beckbury, Co. Salop acquired from the Pigott family, 18th - 19th century. There is also an abstract of title to the Manor of Lewisham, Co. Kent from the 14th to the 17th century and some papers concerning the settled estates in Yorkshire, 19th century. Title deeds include a series relating to Lewisham and Blackheath, 17th - 19th century and an important group concerning the extensive estates in Yorkshire of the Kaye family, 17th - 19th century. George, the eldest son of the 1st Earl of Dartmouth married Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Sir Arthur Kaye of Woodsome, Co. Yorkshire.
There are a few documents relating to sales from estates in West Bromwich, Co. Staffs., Lewisham, Co. Kent and Huddersfield, etc. Co. Yorkshire, which are late 19th or early 20th century in date.
The manorial records in this deposit relate exclusively to Lewisham, Co. Kent and comprise an incomplete series of court rolls 1610-1673 and 1803-1851 with related papers including rentals, 17th - 18th century and surveys, 17th - 19th century. One document which appears to be unrelated to other material is a particular of the honour of Tutbury Co. Staffs, 1683.
Estate accounts are few and there is only one bundle of estate correspondence. This concerns the Lewisham estates from the late 17th to the early 18th century and in particular the dispute between the parishes of Lewisham and Greenwich concerning the bowling green. Leases from the Staffordshire estates date from the mid 19th to the early 20th centuries and include counterpart leases of Sandwell Hall, 1868, 1897 and 1907. The Lewisham estate leases are more numerous and chiefly early 18th century in date. Many relate to premises on Blackheath. There are no personal papers in this deposit with the exception of the inventories and valuations for probate of furniture, jewellery etc. of the 6th Earl of Dartmouth, 1936.
