Administrative HistoryD3794 - These papers were deposited in Newcastle University Library, but their original provenance is not known. They appear to relate chiefly to the time of the Revd. Walter Shirley b. 1768, Rector of Brailsford, Co. Derbyshire, who was the great-grandfather of Walter, 11th Earl Ferrers.

DescriptionThe collection comprises accounts and correspondence relating to the family's estates mainly at Chartley in Staffordshire, 1841-1905, and out-county in Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and London, 1720-1793. There are also correspondence and accounts among the personal papers of family members, 1673-1853. Noteworthy items are some accounts and letters of Robert, 1st Earl Ferrers (1650 - 1717) and a rather larger series of estate accounts and correspondence of Robert, 7th Earl Ferrers (1756 - 1827), a contemporary of Rev. Walter Shirley. The connexion between the Nicholls family and the Shirley family is not clear.
