Born in Houghton Street, Clayton Square Liverpool on 31st July 1870 and was the son of Thomas Joseph.
Educated Caledonian Schools, Liverpool
Married 1917, Violet, daughter of the late Joel Settle
Sir Francis Joseph and Lady Violet Joseph had two daughters, Rosamond and Cynthia
Lived at: The Hall, Alsager, Stoke-on-Trent
This house had to be demolished following a fire in 1953
Died 8th Feb 1951

Honours and awards:
For his war-time work he was made a C.B. E. 1918
He recieved a Knighthood in 1922 (see SD 1631/1)
He was awarded K.B.E. in 1935 (see SD 1631/2)
He became a Baronet in 1942 (see SD 1631/6)
Three years later he was appointed a Knight of the British Order of St. John of Jerusalem of which he was already President for Staffordshire
He was made Honorary Freeman of the City of Stoke-on-Trent (see SD 1631/3).
He was made Freeman of the City of London being a member of Goldsmiths' Company

DescriptionThis collection mainly consists of newspaper cuttings volumes and diaries charting the career and community involvement of Sir Francis Joseph. The newspaper cuttings volumes also document North Staffordshire High Society from 1893-1953. There are also personal papers documenting the honours and awards bestowed on him; his memoirs and family history; correspondence concerning his 80th Birthday and condolence letters written to his widow Lady Violet Joseph.

Sir Francis Joseph was involved in business and industry both locally and nationally. He was Director, Chairman and Managing Director of Settle, Speakman & Co., Ltd.and its subsidiary companies. This was a business he inherited from his father- in-law Joel Settle, but he was also involved with many other businesses and industrial enterprises.
