TitleAudio tapes, scrapbooks, correspondence, and photographs belonging to John Abberley, journalist and broadcaster
Administrative HistoryJohn Abberley (1932-2010), affectionately known as Abbo, began his career as a journalist at 17 years old when he joined the Evening Sentinel in 1949. Starting by reporting on local fairs, shows and village reports he moved on to political stories, sport, and theatre reviews. He joined the BBC in 1967 as one of the founding members of BBC Radio Stoke. He was recruited by BBC station manager Harold Williams for his unrivalled knowledge of local affairs and his potential as a radio personality, and BBC Radio Stoke-on-Trent was opened in 1968. Here he spent many years, until 1989, covering a wide-ranging news brief which included a stint as the station's first Stoke City commentator. After retiring from the radio he returned to The Sentinel and went on to write for its Way We Were publication.
