Title16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers Archive Collection (The Royal Lancers Trust)
ArrangementThe priority for the arrangement of this catalogue has been by time period, which distinguishes the separate regiments from each other, and within this regimental structure operational bases and campaigns have been used to divide periods into shorter spans. However the nature of the archive as a whole is such that collections of documents arising from an individual soldier's career may and often do fall across several of these periods. For this reason each regimental section will typically have subdivisions reflecting operational military activity as well as more general subdivisions reflecting regimental life or individuals' careers.
The final arrangement of this catalogue has been carried out by Nicola Wood, archivist at Stoke on Trent City Archives. The initial cataloguing was undertaken by Louise Ferriday, archivist at Stoke on Trent City Archives.
The descriptions of all the items have been enhanced by a volunteer team of Melvin Bourne, Val Bourne, Frank Foy, Jo Foy, Steve Gidley, Nigel Maus, Sue Walker and Collin Webb. As friends and former members of the 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers regiment, their contribution has been invaluable.
For advice on the basic plan of the structure of the catalogue, Stoke on Trent City Archives gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Col. Charles Radford, 16th/5th Lancers, and Heather Needham of Hampshire Record Office.

DescriptionThe 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers is deposited with the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service by the Trustees of the Royal Lancers in recognition of the fact that from 1949-1993 the 16th/5th Lancers were formally associated with the county of Staffordshire. The Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeth's Own) is the present day regiment to which, following successive amalgamations, the archive of the 16/5th Lancers now belongs.
At the core of the collection are the surviving records of the regiment itself. These may arise directly from military operations or may reflect the social and day to day activities of the regiment, its officers and men. Since it was first formally curated in the Regimental Museum at Stafford and subsequently by the Queen's Royal Lancers Museum, the collection has grown by the donation of documents and records from officers and men who had served with the regiment. These may either be regimental records created or kept in a personal capacity, such as correspondence, or records of an individual's service experience.

A history of the regiment and its predecessors can be found on the website of the Queen's Royal Lancers and Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Museum - www.qrlnymuseum.co.uk - from whom it is also possible to commission research within the collection. Personal access to the archive is freely permitted in the searchroom of Stoke on Trent City Archives.
