TitleWilliam Salt's Original Collection
Datec930-mid 19th cent
DescriptionWilliam Salt's Original Collection is an artificial collection of manuscripts, transcripts, printed books, notes of Staffordshire historians and antiquarians, pedigrees, maps, drawings, portraits, prints, newspapers, pamphlets, printed ephemera, seals and other objects. The collection was brought together by William Salt, a London banker whose family came from Staffordshire, between 1831 and 1863.

The collection developed as a result of Salt's enthusiasm for his family's county, and other related interests. The unifying theme is Staffordshire, it's history and topography, but Salt's other interests, such as religion, the law, and political history, are reflected within the collection.

Broadly the collection falls into three main parts : printed books, pamphlets and proclamations (c.7,300 items), graphic materials (c.7,000 items), and manuscripts (c.3,000 items). Currently the printed books and pamphlets, proclamations, and certain parts of the graphic materials are available in this catalogue.
