DescriptionExtract of a letter from John Cruden dated from New York, his distress with regard to General Burgoyne's fate, considers that had General Howe had taken possession of North River in May, June or July last, the face of affairs would have been different, advisability of General Howe keeping his ground at Philadelphia, to prevent supplies from reaching the New England Governments from Pennsylvania, the trade that has been carried on in the two Carolinas since November is amazing, on the arrival of a reinforcement under General Robertson, Clinton made a spirited effort to form a junction with the now captive army though the only benefit was that the surrender was admitted on better terms
